William Edward Lewis

- William Edward Lewis was born on 15 October 1841 in Lowndes County, Alabama.
- Hamlin Freeman Lewis and Mary Martin Elmore appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1850 in Lowndes County, Alabama. Other members of the household included William Edward Lewis, Lucy Hamlin Lewis and Mary Dixon Hall. Also in the household was (female) Sidney Lampkin (age 25), probably sister of HFL's sister Mary's husband; Frank (age 14) and Stephen (age 11) Lewis, and Elizabeth Reed (age 13), whose origins are not yet known.
- James Edward Scott and Mary Martin Elmore appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1860 in Waverly, Walker (later San Jacinto) County, Texas. Other members of the household included William Edward Lewis, Thomas B. Scott, Ruth Ann Scott, Clifton Scott, Emily V. Scott, Robert L. Scott, William B. Scott, John J. Scott, Lucy Hamlin Lewis, Annie Rebecca Lewis and James E. Scott. Also in the household was overseer John B. Jones.
- William Lewis served in Capt. R. M. Powell's Company of Texas Volunteers (later Company D, 5th Texas Infantry Regiment). He was assigned as courier to Col. Powell 8 November 1862, appointed 4th corporal 1 October 1863, promoted 2nd corporal Spring 1864, and Killed at Wilderness, Virginia.
- On 26 February 1863, W. B."Bose" Campbell wrote home from near Richmond, Virginia, to his aunt Evelina Wood in Montgomery County, Texas: ". . . The boys are generally very healthy. Dick Hardy is
fat and looking fine. George Yoakum ought to have
a discharge, he is in Richmond with the scrofula.
Creed Woodson is also there with a disease of the
kidneys. Wm. Lewis is in camp fat as a bear.
I gave the things to Fuller. He is very proud of them
and is under many obligations to you. I have not
seen Stanton yet. I have fallen off ten pounds
since I have been to camp. I cant say much
for my self as I love home too much ever to be satisfied
any where else. . . ." - William Edward Lewis died on 6 May 1864 at age 22 in Virginia during the Battle of Wilderness.
