- Mary Ann Barlow was born circa 1841 in Georgia.
- She married Jeremiah B. Ward, son of Ignatius Ward and Sarah Pierce, on 29 October 1857 in Wilkinson County, Georgia, with S. T. Player, JP, officiating.
- Jeremiah B. Ward and Mary Ann Barlow appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1860 in Gordon PO, Ramah District, Wilkinson County, Georgia, enumerated not far from Jeremiah's parents.. Other members of the household included George W. Ward.
- On 8 May 1863 (supported by an affadavit by James Stinson), Mary A. Ward stated in a deposition in Wilkinson County, Georgia, that she was the wife of Jeremiah Ward, deceased, who was a private in Captain H. R. Byington's Company (D), 57th Regiment Georgia Volunteers, commanded by Col. Wm Burkuloo, in service of the Confederate States in the present war with the United States, and that the said Jeremiah Ward entered service at Irwinton in Wilkinson County, Georgia, on or about 2 May 1862, and was honorable discharged on or about 5 July 1862, receiving a written discharge which he carried with him to Virginia, and was on 19 September 1862 was conscripted and sent to Camp Randolph and from thence started to Captain S. Ward makes this deposition for the purpose of obtaining from the Confederate government whatever may be due the said Jeremiah Ward at the time of his death, for the pay bounty or other allowance for his service as private aforesaid.
- Research Note: Although Samuel King Ward is identified as a son of Mary Ann Barlow Ward in the 1870, 1880 and 1910 censuses, he was born a few years after Jeremiah Ward's death in 1862. Perhaps he was the orphaned child of one of Jeremiah's brothers.
- Mary Ann Barlow appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1870 in Irwinton PO, Wilkinson County, Georgia. Other members of the household included George W. Ward, Jeremiah Jackson Ward and Samuel King Ward. The origins of Samuel Ward have yet to be determined, but it seems likely that he was a nephew of Jeremiah or Mary Ann Barlow Ward.
