  • The following appeared on 6 July 1919 in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram: (Lampasas, July 5) The body of Powell Wood, commonly called "Snap" Wood, was buried in Oakhill Cemetery at Lampasas, Thursday evening. Snap lived in and around Lampasas nearly forty years, and was personally known to all the older, and most of the newer people.
         Between 1883 and 1888 he was employed in various occupations, some of the time as driver of the street cars from the old Santa Fe depot to the Park Hotel, a distance of two miles. He drove the Lampasas and Llano stage line in 1890 daily, connection at Llano with stages to Mason, Menardville, Junction City with mail for all the county offices.
         The country was more or less exploited by so-called gunmen, desperadoes and outlaws, often in the guise of cowboys, and often held up stages from Lampasas to San Saba, and to Burnet, but there were no holdups on the Llano route. Snap always went prepared to defend his mail and passengers.
         Snap carried the mail for a number of years, until the route was changed. He was always friendly, pleasant and helpful in every way to all people with whom he came in contact.
         It was in those early days that he married Miss Florence Anderson, daughter of J. F. Anderson, who kept the Grundyville postoffice. For the last twelve or fifteen years he has lived and cultivated a large farm and ranch, owned by Capt. J. F. Skinner, about four or five miles west of town.
         Powell was born in Houston and reared there by his uncle, his parents being dead. So far as he knew he was the last of his kin. He was 66 years of age, a good citizen and neighbor, and a nobly good husband and father to his wife and five children.
