- He was a physician, according to the 1880 census.
- The following appeared on 29 January 1887 in the Columbus Daily Enquirer: Jr. J. W. Cameron, Practicing Physician. Diseases of Infancy and Childhood a specialty. D. J. W. Cameron can be found at Evans & Howard's Drug Store. Office Hours from 8 to 10 a m and from 2 to 6 p m. Residence No 310 Tenth street, opposite the synagogue.

- John William Cameron died on 16 October 1893 at age 56 in Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia, at 1327 First Avenue at his residence.

Last evening Dr. John W. Cameron, the well known specialist physician, whose serious illness has been mentioned in the Enquirer Sun, died at his residence, 1327 First avenue, surrounded by his family. Dr. Cameron was born in Meriwether county, April 15, 1837, and graduated at Nashville, Tenn., in 1857. During the war he served as surgeon of the Twenty-ninth Georgia Regiment. In 1877 he removed to Columbus, and soon built up an excellent practice, and shortly after was elected city and county physician, and served altogether very efficiently for four years.
In January, 1866, he married Miss Fanny Smith, of Harris County, who together with four children, survive him. They are Mrs. H. H. Warner, Jrs. J. R. Wood, Stanford M. and Miss Emma F. Cameron.
The deceased was a Master Mason, and was also connected with the Knights of Honor. His funeral will take place from his late residence this afternoon at 4 o'clock.
