- John Hostetter was born on 1 March 1799 in Kentucky or possibly St. Charles County, Missouri.
- He was known as Uncle Jack.
- He married Hannah Donovan circa 1817 in Pennsylvania.
- John Hostetter and Hannah Donovan appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1850 in Sacramento County, California. Other members of the household included Robert Hostetter, Daniel Hostetter, George Hostetter and Edward Hostetter. It appears that Edward/Eveline born c1842 was a grandchild, but requires further research.
- He was a laborer, according to the 1850 census.
- Green Wood purchased from Israel Allphin 26.10 acres in the Joseph Lindley Survey, 640 acres less 164.5 acres reserved for Davis Bays in the John Hostetter Survey, 116 acres in the John Sadler Survey, and 81.90 acres in the Rodney Hostetter Survey, all for $400, general warranty deed dated 7 March 1853, recorded in Montgomery County, Texas, on 29 March 1853.
- John Hostetter and Hannah Donovan appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1860 in Montgomery PO, Montgomery County, Texas. Other members of the household included Rodney Hostetter, Daniel Hostetter, George Hostetter and Edward Hostetter.
- He was a farmer, according to the 1860 census.
- On Friday, 13 December 1861, Green Wood recorded in his plantation daily account book: "Bought a young chestnut Sorrel Horse with star on the face, right hind foot white, from John Hostetter, $150."
- John Hostetter and Hannah Donovan appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1870 in Peno Township, Pike County, Missouri. Also in the household was Lillie Moffett, age 1.
- He was a merchant, according to the 1870 census.
- John Hostetter died on 6 April 1871 at age 72.
- He was interred at the Hostetter family cemetery, Pike County, Missouri, on the old Isaac Hostetter farm, 3-1/2 miles northeast of Frankford.
