  • The following appeared on 25 February 1924 in The Abilene Reporter: The following obituary of John Edward Pegues, who died last month at his home in De Rio, will be of interest to many Abilene friends:
The death of John Edward Pegues, vice president and general manager of Roach-McLymont Company, which occurred at his home in this city, very suddenly at six o’clock last Saturday morning from neuralgia of the heart, cast a pall of gloom over the entire city, and shot darts of sorrow into the hearts of thousands of friends and admirers throughout Texas.
He had arisen and was kindling the morning fires when his wife and children heard him fall to the floor, a stricken man. Hurriedly arising, his wife and little daughter rushed into the room only to find that the dazzling light reflected from a noble, magnetic personality had gone out, that the kindly whimsical smile parting lips that spoke evil of no man, had departed never to return. He had “gone over the river to rest under the shade of the trees,” and in vain did the physician hurriedly summoned try to recall him.
Deceased was born in Pontotoc, Miss., on November 18, 1883. He was only fourteen years of age when he removed to Texas with his father and other members of the family, and settled at Abilene, where he grew to manhood. He subsequently met and was happily married to Miss Beulah Flanagan at Stanton, Texas, on June 2nd, 1909. To this union were born four children, three sons and one daughter.
He came to Del Rio in January, 1916, to become identified with the Roach-McLymont Company in the capacity of general manager and by dent of hard work, energetic attention to details, and unstinted acumen, added to a wonderfully magnetic personality, he made himself all but indespensable to the interests of the firm.
He was a Mason of high degrees, having passed through the Royal Arch and attained the estate of Knighthood in the order of Knights Templar Masons, and was also a Shriner. He was an honored member of both the Del Rio Country Club and the Del Rio Rotary, in which organizations his genial disposition and personal magnetism gained for him an enviable reputation for congeliality and cheerfulness. He was a faithful member of the Methodist church, and an efficient member of the board of stewards.
Deceased, who was only 40 years of age when the end came, is survived by his wife and three children, Alice Mae, Scott and Robert Pegues, all of this city; his father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Pegues of Crystal City; three brothers, S. S., Melton and Claude Pegues of Crystal City, and four sisters, Mrs. Howard Bidelspacher and Miss Virginia Pegues of Crystal City; Mrs. A. M. Girand of San Antonio and Mrs. A. L. Christian of Abilene, Texas.
Funeral services were conducted from the Methodist Church Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock by Rev. J. M. Perry, pastor, assisted by Rev. J. T. King, pastor of the Baptist church, and Rev. F. H. Stallknecht, minister of the Episcopal church of this city.
The procession that followed the bier to the grave side was perhaps the largest in recent years, and while awaiting the arrival of the train on which a sister came, E. S. Block, president of the Del Rio Rotary, and A. G. Edwards delivered eloquent eulogies in honor of the departed, whose remains were laid to rest as the curtains of night were being drawn, and in the words of his pastor, “as the sun sank down behind the western rim without a fleck of cloud leaving behind a halo of golden glory over hills and plains—so did John Edward Pegues pass from the walks of men, without cloud or stain upon his character, leaving behind him an influence as warm and pure as golden sunlight.”
         The active pall bearers were John M. Doak, W. M. Abbey, C. O. Fokes, L. Rust, Russ Hamilton and Geo. E. Love; honorary pall bearers were: J. A. Forman, W. F. Littleton, C. C. Wilcox, W. C. Rau, Dr. D. A. York, B. G. Stafford, W. F. Gobbess, F. W. Herbst, U. E. Ross, H. M. Hutchinson, John Rowland, E. F. Measles, Dr. B. F. Orr, R. T. Hunnicut, Jesus Salvatierra, L. J. Magenis, C. E.
