John H. Gant

John H. Gant was born on 29 January 1808 in Orange County, North Carolina.
He married Martha L. Owen on 8 October 1843 in Shelby County, Alabama.
John H. Gant and Martha L. Owen appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1860 in Montgomery PO, Montgomery County, Texas. Other members of the household included George Thomas Pinchback. Also in the household were farmer M. L. Elan and well digger W Hames.
He was a farmer, according to the 1860 census.
On Tuesday, 30 December 1862, Green Wood recorded in his plantation daily account book: "Sent 2 waggons & 6 hands to Mr Gant,s for Pork. Killed 4 hogs for Mr Williamson (732 lbs). Killed 7 hogs for Mrs Thomason (812 lbs). Sent them to her cut up & spread." And on the following day, "The Waggons returned from Mr J H Gants with 20 hogs, 4667 lbs, at 10 cents per lb." On Thursday, the 1st, "Settled up the 20 hogs bought of J. H. Gant, all large meat."
John H. Gant and Martha L. Owen appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1870 in Montgomery PO, Montgomery County, Texas. Other members of the household included Sarah H. (?)
He was a farmer, according to the 1870 census.
John H. Gant died on 10 February 1878 at age 70.
His wife Martha L. Owen became a widow at his death.
He was interred at Willis Cemetery, Willis, Montgomery County, Texas.
