George Powell was among the very first of these old settlers. He bought a plantation on the west side of Catoma creek, and engaged in planting. He was known far and wide for his many qualities of head and heart. He was a Methodist, and helped to organize and establish one of the first Methodist churches in the county. He was liberal and charitable with his means. His home was the home of the preachers of every denomination. He was given to hospitality, and the string of the latch was on the outside of the door. His wife was a daughter of Judge Peter Williamson, a most excellent woman. They had four children--two sons and two daughters. Michael, the oldest son, amrried a daughter of Maj. Green Wood. Peter G. Married a daughter of William Falconer. Sallie, the oldest daughter, married Nicholas Barnett; and Bettie, the youngest, married William Taylor.
Mr. Powell remained on his plantation until the children all married, and then moved with his wife to Tallassee where he lived a number of years, and late in life moved with his son to Kentucky. His wife died soon afterwards, and in a few years he too died at a ripe old age.
