The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Friday morning at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2009 in Greenlawn Cemetery, Beach Blvd., Jacksonville, FL with Hewell Funeral Home in Jacksonville, FL handling the arrangements. Mrs. Murphy was born March 11, 1918 in Cairo, GA daughter of the late John Dixon Thomason and Mamie Jane Lewis Thomason. She attended Cairo High School and Massey Business College in Jacksonville, FL. She was executive secretary to several officers of Barnett Bank and legal secretary of attorneys in Jacksonville. In 1942, she was married to Henry Carleton Plant who owned and operated two bowling alleys in Columbus, GA. They had two children, Sharon Michele Plant and Henry Carleton Plant, Jr. After returning home from serving in WWII, they moved to Jacksonville, FL in 1948. Mr. Plant died in 1949. Later she married Frank Capps, a native of Jacksonville. He passed away in 1975. In 1983 she married Thomas Jackson Murphy, whom she had known since 1942 when she was a bridesmaid in his first wedding. Mrs. Murphy was an avid bridge player and was President of Thursday's Bridge Club at Gallops Senior Citizens Center in Columbus, GA. She was a member of First Baptist Church and the Christus Sunday School Class. Survivors include her husband, Thomas Jackson Murphy of Columbus, GA; two children, Sharon Michele (Larry) Miller of Greenville, SC and Henry Carleton (Fran) Plant of E. Palatka, FL; five step-children, Frank R. (Nancy) Capps, Jr. of Lawndale, CA, Claudia Capps (Nicholas) Bomicino of Woodland Hills, CA, Connie Capps (Fred) Zuver of Cherokee, AL; Kathy Murphy (Michael) Herndon of Columbus, GA, and Melanie Murphy (Mike) Gunn of Huntsville, AL; three granddaughters, Laurie Michele (David) Stone of Gray Court, SC, Kara Elizabeth Domen of Simpsonville, SC and Kristin Plant Germany of Palatka, FL; five great-grandchildren, Tyler Case, Haleigh Domen, Christian Domen, Megan Germany and Kylie Germany; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
