Pegues, in Smithville, on Friday, June 17, 1904, after an illness of near eight months, Mr. J. R. Pegues, familiarly called "Squire Pegues" by those who knew him best--aged about 52 years. His long illness but better fitted him for the arrival of the pilot that carried him safely into the heaven of eternal rest. His remains were laid to rest in the graveyard at New Hope church on Saturday morning at 11 o'clock, Rev. T. L. Belvin his pastor conducting the services in the presence of a large concourse of relatives and friends.
He was loved and liked by all who knew him. He took an active interest in everything that was good and true and died as he lived.
