  • The following appeared on 17 April 1924 in the Rockingham Post-Dispatch: The death of Mr. Frank Preston Brooks Pegues, at his home 14 miles south of Rockingham, across the State line in South Carolina, Tuesday morning at 8:30 came as a distinct shock to his friends.
         He suffered a stroke of paralysis in June, 1922, and since then he has had what might be termied "ups and downs," better one day and worse the next. Tuesday morning he felt better, and was helped to the front porch where he was enjoying the Spring brightness with his devoted wife sitting beside him. Without warning he fainted; he was helped to his bed, and apparently rallied, having sufficient strength to reach up and pluck a handkerchief from his wife's belt; and almost immediately expired.
         The funeral was held from St. Paul church, nearby, this (Thursday) morning, conducted by Rev. J. B. Weldon, assisted by Rev. J. E. Ford, of Orangeburg. The active pall-bearers were J. LeGrand Everett, James McArthur, F. W. Pegues, Ernest and W. Walker Duvall, C. K. Waddill, Herbert Wannamaker, and S. G. Godfrey; together with an honorary escort of friends. The large number present, and the beautiful flowers, were in a measure an attestation of the genuine regard in which he was held.
         Frank Preston Brooks Pegues was born in Florida Feb. 20 1857, a son of Fletcher and Maria Louisa Bryan Pegues. The family moved to Marlboro county when he was quite small, and his life has there been spent, quietly, and yet of material service to his State. He was made a Steward in New Hope church at the age of 21, and served as such until his death. And only his enfeebled condition two years ago forced him to give up his work as Supt. of that Sunday School. He served for six years in the South Carolina Legislature, and took an active part in State and County affairs; also, he was a director in the Merchants & Farmers Bank of Cheraw.
         He was married to Miss Jennie May Pegues Dec. 7 1880. She was a daughter of Rev. Rufus Randolph and Nancy Gillespie Pegues. She with 8 children survive; they are: Mrs. Olen (Mary) Pegues, Randolph, Preston, Marlborough, Mrs. Hugh (Nancy) May, Victor, Mrs. Paul (Jennie May) Hammond, and Leak Pegues.
