  • The following appeared on 12 July 1909 in The Montgomery Advertiser: (Demopolis, July 11) Mrs. Alex Torbert of Old Spring Hill, died this afternoon in this city from pellagra.
She had been suffering from the disease for some time. In the last stages of the malady the physicians of this city, and Dr. Cole, of Mobile, used some desperate measures to save her life. A woman from a distance, who had been afflicted with Pellagra and who had recovered, came to Demopolis at the instance of the doctors today to give her blood to be transferred to Mrs. Torbert. This operation was performed as a last resort in hopes that it might be of some avail, as all medical means had failed.
Mrs. Torbert died a few hours after the operation, her condition being practically hopeless at the time of the operation.
Mrs. Torbert will be buried near her home in Old Spring Hill Monday.

Rev. J. M. Quinn, pastor of the churches of Dayton and Spring Hill, and Rev. Mr. Howard, pastor of the Baptist church at Linden, officiated.
Mrs. Torbert was Miss Maggie Well Wooddy before her marriage, about three years ago, and resided at Sturkis, Ala. L. M. Wooddy, of Gold Hill, brother of the deceased, and his wife, and Mrs. J. K. Pinkston, of Opelika, sister of Mrs. Torbert, attended the funeral.
