  • The following appeared on 8 January 1915 in The Putnam County Courier: Jacob Karl died at his home in this village on Thursday morning, January 7, 1915, after an illness of several weeks.
         Mr. Karl was born in Germany December 25, 1855, a son of Anthony Karl and Sophia Dexheimer. He learned the barber trade in the old country and came to this country when a young man with his parents.
         He was united in marriage many years ago and his widow, Wilhelmina Karl, survives with three children, Mrs. Minnie Cole, George and Isabella Karl. About twenty years ago Mr. Karl moved to this village with his family and opened a tonsorial parlor which he conducted until a few weeks before his death when he was obliged to give up work on account of his health. He was examined by a New York specialist several weeks ago and although everything was done to relieve him, he died as a result of complication of diseases on Thursday, in his 60th year.
         After the fire in 1907 which destroyed the house in which Mr. Karl and his family resided he built a house on lower Gleneida avenue and has since occupied it. His reputation as a barber was well known and he enjoyed a large patronage in this village.
         During the many years spent in this village he has made many friends who are grieved to learn of his death and the family have the sympathy of the community in their great loss.
         The funeral will be held at the St. James Catholic church here Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Father Murray officiating. Interment will be made in the St. Lawrence cemetery in Brewster.
