- The following appeared on 18 June 1904 in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle: (Batavia, June 17) Mrs. John Welker died at her home in Darien Center yesterday after a long illness from spinal meningitis. She was 40 years old. Mrs. Welker was born in Attica. Besides her husband she leaves ten children, Walter, Ida, Carl, Anna, Earl, Ernest, Grace, Otto, John and Allen; her father, Henry Sierk, of Bennington; six brothers and six sisters.
- The following appeared on 7 January 1918 in The Daily News: (Darien Center) The death of John W. Welker occurred at his home in this village at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon after an illness of over a month with acute stomach trouble.
Mr. Welker was born on November 7, 1860, at Bennington. He came to this town 19 years ago and was successfully engaged in farming. He purchased the Carlton G. Fisher farm a few years ago and carried on several other farms. He was also engaged in the produce, feed and mill business several years, owning the late J. J. Ellis feed mill, which he sold about five years ago.
Mr. Welker was a member and a trustee of the M.E. church and his chair in the choir was seldom vacant. He was also a member of the Grange, Odd Fellows, Maccabees, Improvement Society and Fire Department. He held many offices in different organizations. He was a Republican and justice of the peace four years, his term of office having expired last December 31st. He was also chairman of the Darien Center branch of the Dairymen's League. He was a very industrious man both as an official and a business man, being always awake to the interests of the town and community manners.
Mr. Welker married Miss Ida Sierk of Bennington on March 1, 1881. She Died June 16, 1904. He married Mrs. Charlotte Allen of Darien Center on October 9, 1907. One son was born to them, La Vern Welker. Besides his wife, Mr. Welker is survived by seven sons and three daughters--Walter, Otto, John, Jr., Allen and La Vern and Miss Grace Welker, all of this place, Miss Anna Welker of Batavia, Carl Welker and Mrs. Henry Lamb of Darien and Corporal Ernest Welker of Camp Wadsworth, Spartanburg, S. C. One son, Earl, was killed in the Spanish-American war. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and by two brothers and a sister, Augustus Welker and Mrs. Fred Patterson of Batavia and Willard Welker of Lancaster.
The funeral will be held from the M.E. church on Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock, the Rev. George Richmire of this place officiating. The Odd Fellows will hold the services at the grave. The burial will be in the Welker lot in the Darien Center cemetery.
