         New Orleans.
    Editor, The Times Picayune:
I wish to explain to William L. Wonderly, in reply to his letter, "Beyond Forty" in The T-P Sept. 6, just what the "beyond fortys" are kicking about.
When I was 40 I had three children: 1 year, 5 years and 9 years old. Life had just begun for me at that time and I was healthy, strong, able, fully capable and willing to work. I had the responsibility of raising and educating these three children, but I was turned down because I was too old in lots of places. I have a trade and I am considered an expert at my trade. I drove taxi-cabs, held watching jobs and my wife went to work in order to give these three children just an 8th grade education.
This will explain to Mr. Wonderly just what we mean and what the "above forties" are kicking about. We want jobs and money to raise and educate our children and to make good and useful citizens of them. If we are cut off at 40 we cannot do it. Do you think the "above forties" have a just complaint?
In conclusion I will ask Mr. Wonderly not to think that we "over forty" wish to wish to underrate the "under-forty." I agree that we over forty should do the defending because we are not of much use here after 40. Group insurance stops us. Corporations can hire us but the older we are the more they have to pay for insurance. Naturally that is the cause of over 40 not being able to get work.
         -- George F. Thompson.
