- The following appeared on 3 July 1942 in The Nashville Tennesseean: (Decherd, July 2) Taking place at 5 o'clock at the Presbyterian Church here this afternoon was the marriage of Miss Dorothy shirley Powell, daughter of Mrs. Robert Ross Powell, to Joe Bill Spaulding, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Spaulding. The Rev. S. I. Nash, pastor of the church, officiated.
A program of nuptial music was given by Miss Emily Bass, pianist; Miss Mary Boyd Fielder of Crossville, vocalist, and Mrs. Frank Spaulding of Arcola, Miss., violinist.
The altar was banked with greensw interspersed with arrangements of white flowers. The wedding scene was illuminated entirely by tapers burning in branched candelabra.
The bride, who was given in marriage by her uncle, C. E. Murray, wore a wedding gown of white silk marquisette. . .
Miss Suzanne Hazard of Columbus, Miss., served as maid of honor. Her gown was of yellow marquisette. . .
The bridesmaids included Miss Alice Harton of tullahoma, Miss Jane Haswell of Nashville, Mrs. Robert Winton of Decherd, and Miss Emeline Price of Winchester. Their gowns were of green marquisette. . .
Dr. Frank Spaulding of Arcola was his brother's best man. The ushers were Earl Best and Thomas Stevens of Knoxville, and Cleo Stevenson and Joe Lyon, both of Memphis.
Following the ceremony, the bride's mother, Mrs. Powell, was hostess at a reception at her home here. The guests included the members of the two families, the bridal party and the out-of-town guests.
Later in the evening, Mr. and Mrs. Spaulding left for a wedding trip. For traveling the bride chose a blue and white printed dress, featuring a blue linen coat, and matching hat and accessories. They will make their home in Memphis.
Mrs. Spaulding, a daughter of the late Mr. Powell, is a graduate of Ward-Belmont School, in Nashville, where she also received a certificate in speech.
Mr. Sapulding attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, and is a student at the School of Medicine of the University of Tennessee, in Memphis. He is a member of the Phi Ro Sigma medical fraternity.
