  • The following appeared on 11 March 1958 in the Greenville Herald Banner: Funeral services for J. Dixon Mitchell, Kansas City, Missouri, will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Welch Funeral Home Chapel in Longview, Texas.
         Mr. Mitchell, a brother of Mrs. Marvin Love and an uncle of Raymond Gray, Greenville, died Monday morning in Kansas City.
         Burial will be in Longview with nephews acting as pallbearers.
         Born and reared in Greenville, Mr. Mitchell was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. G. P. Mitchell. He attended Greenville schools and Texas A. & M. College and for the past 30 years had been a resident of Kansas City where he had served as superintendent of the Coca-Cola Bottling plant.
         He was married to the former Lela Sandifur of Longview.
         Survivors include his widow; one son, J. Dixon Mitchell Jr., Atlanta, Ga; his sister, Mrs. Love; his nephew, Raymond Gray of Greenville and other relatives.

  • The following appeared on 5 December 2008 in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: J. Dixon Mitchell, Jr., age 90, of Decatur, GA passed away Nov. 25, 2008. Born July 26, 1918 in Sulphur Springs, TX, Mitch was raised in Kansas City, MO, where he worked in the Coca-Cola Bottling plant during high school. After graduating from Purdue Univ. in 1939 with a degree in Electrical Engineering, he accepted a position with Westinghouse Lamp Division in Bloomfield, NJ. He was drafted into the Army in 1940 and attended Officer Candidate School where he was commissioned into the Signal Corps in charge of radar sites on the East coast during WWII. In 1946, he was discharged as a Major in the Army Air Force. Upon returning to Bloomfield, NJ, he met Carol Hauber and they wed in 1948. Mitch and Carol moved to Atlanta when he became the SE District Engineer for Westinghouse Lamp Division, where he remained employed until his retirement in 1982. Professional memberships included: Illuminating Engineering Society, National President for 1963-64, Fellow Emeritus; National Professional Engineering Society, Life Time Membership; Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. Retirement was filled with travelling, golfing at Northwood Country Club, and participation at church. Mitch is survived by his wife, Carol Hauber Mitchell; daughter and son-in-law, Beth Mitchell and Jim Rush of Columbus, OH; grandchildren, Jimmy Rush, Todd and Heather Sanville; great-granddaughter, Ryan Sanville; daughter, Sue Mitchell and Joe Cumbie of Buford, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Mark Grace of San Jose, CA; grandchildren, Patrick and Brian Grace. A memorial service will be held December 7, 2008, 3:00 PM at Clairmont Presbyterian Church, followed by a reception.
