Born April 29, 1924 in Cheraw, South Carolina. Pilot in the Naval Air Corps during World War II. He studied at Wofford College, Duke University, and Cornell University, earning a PhD in history in 1951. He taught history at the University of Colorado for two years and then at The Ohio State University for 43 years, retiring in 1997. Member of the Medieval Academy of America, the American Historical Association and many other professional organizations. Author of Lawyers of the Last Capetians and numerous articles and reviews. Founding member of the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Ohio State University. Awarded the College of Humanities Exemplary Faculty Award in 1996. Survived by loving wife, Jutta Catharine of Worthington; sons, Robert (Cheri) of Baltimore, MD, James of Dewitt, NY, William (Aysegul) of Ottawa, Canada; step-daughter, Jeannine (Charles) Parker of Washington, D.C; and grandchildren, Brenton, Julia and Jasmine. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, July 9, 2004 at Worthington Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends afterwards. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Wofford College, Spartanburg, South Carolina and to the Worthington Historical Society. Arrangements by Schoedinger Worthington Chapel.

The family of Franklin Johnson Pegues, a native of Cheraw, will hold a burial ceremony for his ashes on Saturday Nov. 13, 2010 at 11 a.m. in the cemetery adjacent to Old St. David's Church in Cheraw.
Born on April 29, 1924 and raised with his brother, John Keitt Pegues, Mr. Pegues was a pilot in the Naval Air Corps during World War II. He studied at Wofford College, Duke University and Cornell University, earning a Ph.D. in history in 1951. He taught history at the University of Colorado for two years and spent the following 43 years teaching at The Ohio State University, from which he retired in 1997.
His many pursuits included a lifelong interest in the history of the Pegues family, which is rooted in Chesterfield and Marlboro Counties. Mr. Pegues' family warmly invites extended family and friends who knew him and his family to share the ceremony with them.
