Mr. Pegues was born January 1, 1920, and raised in Cheraw, SC. John Keitt enlisted in the Navy in 1937, and began a distinguished naval career. He served aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise (CV-6), U.S.S. Valley Forge (CV-45), and the U.S.S. Midway (CV-41) (all aircraft carriers) during World War II. He served thirty years in the Navy and retired at the rank of Commander. He was awarded the following ribbons: Good Conduct, American Theater, Pacific-Asiatic Theater, American Defense, and Presidential Unit Citation. He held various degrees and memberships: B.S.E.E. degree from the Naval Postgraduate school, a graduate degree from the Navy Postgraduate University in Monterey, CA, a senior member of the institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, a member of the Engineering Club of Hampton Roads, and member of the U.S. Naval Institute. He was also appointed Director of Buildings and Grounds at Old Dominion University at Norfolk,Va; a position which he held for several years.
John Keitt Pegues III was married to Constance Rush of Cheraw, SC for 47 years until her death in January, 1989. John Keitt was a direct descendent of Claudius Pegues who came to the American Colonies and settled in the area of South Carolina in the early 1700's.
John Keitt III was always known as the kindest, patient and most loving person to all who had the great blessing of having him in their lives. He had a quick wit and wonderful sense of humor. He will greatly missed by all whose lives he touched.
Survivors include his wife, Loneta Brown Pegues of San Diego, CA; sons, John Keitt Pegues IV of Warrenton, VA, and Michael Nolan of San Diego, CA; daughters, Mrs. Jeanne Pegues Smith of Virginia Beach, VA Mrs. Lin Hypes of Antelope, CA, and Mrs. Patricia DeCosta of Carlsbad, CA; brother, Dr. Frank J. Pegues of Worthington, OH; grandchildren, Emily Stevens Pegues, John Adam Pegues, Brian Smith, Kelley Jeanne Smith, Lor Stangl, Michael Stangl, Kiresten Bradford, Johnathan Hypes, Garrett Hypes, Farah Nolan, Michael A. Nolan, III, Shannon DeCosta, Kathryn DeCosta, James DeCosta; and great grandchildren, Dexter Bradford, and Caitlin Stangl.
