         Mrs. Hammond, widow of Paul Fitzsimmons Hammond, died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998. Born in Marlboro County, she was a daughter of Francis Preston Brooks and Jennie Pegues Pegues.
         Surviving are a daughter, Nancy Louise Hammond of New York, N.Y; and several nieces and nephews.

         A funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 16 from New Hope United Methodist Church. Cremains were interred in the Pegues Cemetery.
         Born in Welch, W.Va., Miss Hammond was the only child of the late Jenne May Pegues and Paul Fitzsimmons Hammond of Pegues Place, north of Wallace. Miss Hammond was an Episcopalian and a member of the American Vacuum Society and American Institute of Physics. She was a graduate of Salem Academy, Winston-Salem, N.C., and in 1949 graduated from Vanderbilt University where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
         When she retired in 1991 after 34 years' service as executive secretary for the American Institute of Physics, Miss Hammond became a member of the New York City Volunteer Police Force. After completing training, she helped patrol her neighborhood in midtown Manhattan, where she lived for 40 years.
         Surviving are cousins.
