Dear brother of Frank LaBan of Tucson AZ and Marion Jahelka of Teaneck NJ. Born in New York City, Richard graduated from Peter Stuyvesant High School, followed by graduation from the University of Kansas with a BA and MA in Journalism. Using that skill he became Editor-in-Chief of a McGraw-Hill publication and was for many years National Advertising Sales Manager for the American Automobile Association. During World War II he contributed to the war effort through his work in Intelligence in Washington DC. In 1955 he married Evelyn Meadow of Birmingham AL, a wonderful second marriage for both and the family moved to Englewood where they enjoyed membership at the Knickerbocker Country Club in Tenafly. Richard was an avid golfer for many years. He and Evelyn toured the world together and constantly attracted new friends through their charm and love of people. They made a handsome couple as they danced ballroom and salsa in many of the world's finest nightclubs. Richard was a member of Houman's Investment Club and the Englewood Men's Club. He was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word, and those who knew him appreciated his sense of humor, his love of life, his intellect and his kindness. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Memorial service Saturday September 20, 2008 at 3 PM at the Barrett Funeral Home 148 Dean Drive, Tenafly. - The following appeared on 2 November 2011 in The Birmingham News: Evelyn Meadow LaBan, of Englewood, NJ, a former resident of Birmingham, passed away peacefully on October 28 at the age of 100. Beloved daughter of the late Evelyn and Bert M. Meadow of Birmingham, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 blessed years, Richard K. LaBan in 2008. Together they traveled the world and graced dance floors in many countries. Mrs. LaBan was educated in the Birmingham public schools and graduated from Birmingham Southern College, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. She was a member of Colonial Dames of New York, the John Parke Custis Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Lee Family of Virginia. An avid gardener, she was a founding member of Mountain Park Garden Club in New Jersey. She was a former president of the Englewood chapter of the Garden Club of America. Survivors include daughters Roberta Culver of Arlington, VA, and Eve Drew of San Luis Obispo, CA; her sister, Katherine M. McTyeire (William) of Birmingham; three grandchildren, Deborah Della Rosa (Brian) of Moorestown, NJ, Karl Winston Boyles of Pensacola, FL, and Christopher Dobler of Los Angeles, CA; and two great grandchildren, Sofia and Michael Della Rosa. She was the dear aunt of William W. McTyeire, III of North Carolina; Robert Adams McTyeire (Pamela) of Mary Esther, FL, Kate Millhouse (David) and Helen Drennan (Richard) of Birmingham.
