- The following appeared on 29 August 1946 in the Linden Democrat Reporter: Coming as a grevious shock to his many friends was the death of George Westwood Cuninghame, after only a few hours illness, at his home in Linden shortly after noon Monday, August 26, 1946. Mr. Cuninghame suffered a heart attack Sunday night, but appeared to be a little better Monday morning. About noon he had another attack and passed away quietly within a few minutes.
Funeral services were held from the home Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock, with the Rev. E.P. Fendley, Baptist pastor of Demopolis, and the Rev. R.W. Judkins, Methodist pastor of Linden, officiating. Active pall bearers were his nephews, John, Will and Herman Todd, Gordon and Cecil Martin, and James Cuninghame. Honorary pall bearers were the deacons of the Linden Baptist Church, Judge A.L.Hasty, M.F. Law, J.C. Camp and T.H. Boggs.
The services were concluded at the Old Linden Cemetery, where interment was made. Many beautiful flowers, beautiful music, and the large concourse of friends attending the funeral attested to the popularity of this good man.
Among out-of-town relatives attending were: Judge and Mrs. James G. Cuninghame and Mrs. Roy Tucker of Grove Hill; Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Martin and daughter, Dorothy, of Thomasville; Messrs. John, Will and Herman Todd, James Cuninghame, and Miss Lilla Todd of Mobile; Mr. Gordon Martin of Pensacola; Mrs. Pearl King, Mrs. George Buck, and Mrs. Junior Crocker of Thomaston; Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Goers of Missouri. Mrs. Minnie Martin, his only sister, of Thomasville was too ill to come and her daughter, Dr. Bessie Martin, remained with her.
Mr. Cuninghame was born at Morvin in 1870, the son of William Cuninghame Sr.and Emma Judith Armistead Cuninghame. He was educated in the schools of Clarke County and at the University of Alabama. He came to Linden in 1888 and had made his home here since. He joined the Baptist Church when a young man and had been a deacon for more than 25 years. He also served the church as clerk and treasurer, using his unusual ability in the service of the Lord. He did many acts of charity during his lifetime that no one new about until his death. In 1909 he married Miss Eva Howell of Linden and their mutual devotion made their home life unusually beautiful.
At several times he had served as a public official in various capacities and at the time of his death was Register of the Marengo County Circuit Court in Equity, to which he was appointed by the late Judge Elmore. His efficiency in this office and the neatness and accuracy of his records brought frequent complimentary references from public examiners.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Eva Howell Cuninghame; a sister, Mrs. Minnie Martin of Thomasville; and a brother, Judge James G. Cuninghame of Grove Hill, besides a large number of nieces and nephews.
