  • The following appeared in the Navasota Examiner: Many hearts were saddened to hear of the death of Mrs. Ellen Smith Bookman, which occurred at her home Sunday afternoon, October 1, 1944, after a short illness.
         Mrs. Bookman, the daughter of James Tillman Smith and Ellen Pegues Smith, was born in Navasota, Texas, March 3, 1870. Her father moved to Cleburne and later to Ft. Worth, where she spent her girlhood. She was married in Ft. Worth, July 27, 1910, to Pickens Butler Bookman, a member of the pioneer families of Grimes County, who died at his home here April 29, 1927.
         Mrs. Bookman is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Marshall C. Peters, two grandsons, Marshall Bookman and Mervin Dansby Peters of Navasota, and four brothers, William C., DeMaret, Selwyn and Felix C. Smith, of Ft, Worth.
         Services were held at the home Monday afternoon at 5 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. H; N. Cunningham, D.D., pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. The following friends were pall bearers: W. T. Taliaferro, Dr. H. E. Schultz, Ewing Norwood, Erie Quinn, O. L. Foster and Hood Barry.
         Mrs. Bookman was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church of Ft. Worth. Since making her home here, she has been an earnest worker in the Presbyterian Church with her husband and daughter. She took an active part in the Robert Raines Chapter, D.A.R., and was also a member of the Hannibal Boone Chapter, U.D.C. She was of a quiet, retiring nature but a fine Christian character, and a true friend. She was charitable both in thought and deed.
         Many friends and relatives from out of town came to attend the last sad rights.
