    and Brooks Minks. She was Brooks Gregg of El Paso and is the sister of Lucie Lee Black in case you've misplaced the married names. The following day Merle and Brooks came by the hotel for a quick hello and toast to the it's-a-small-world-department . . . then they and their children were off for a snowy Christmas in Austria. Good news for their friends and family: they're being transferred to Gulf Oil headquarters in Pittsburgh sometime in January so check for new addresses etc. . . .

  • The following appeared on 12 March 2010 in the Los Angeles Times: Merle Edward Minks, 92, passed away peacefully at home in Aliso Viejo, CA on March 8th. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Mary Brooks; a daughter, Marilyn Rosenberg; a son, John Minks; and six loving grandchildren.
         Merle was born in Fisher, IL and attended Knox College. He served his country in World War II and retired as a Captain, when he enrolled at the University of Texas Law School. After graduation, Merle joined Gulf Oil Corp, and retired in 1981 as General Counsel in Pittsburgh, PA.
         Merle was dedicated to community service, as a Board Member for the Boy Scouts of America and the YMCA in Pittsburgh in the 1970s. After retirement he moved to Laguna, CA, and continued his community service, serving as a Board Member at the South Coast Medical Center, and as a Trustee of Knox College.
         Merle was a devoted Episcopalian and faithfully served his parish in many capacities in Houston, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, and San Juan Capistrano. In the 1980s, Merle was active in the establishment of St. Margarets Episcopal Church and School in San Juan Capistrano, serving as the Bishops Warden for six years to the church, and as Bishops Chancellor and Trustee to the school . In 2004, the Bishop of Los Angeles appointed Merle as an Honorary Canon to the Diocese.
         Merle's life will be celebrated at a memorial service at St. Margarets Episcopal Church, San Juan Capistrano, on Sunday March 14th at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Margarets Episcopal School - Scholarship Fund, 31641 La Novia Avenue, San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675.
