  • He married Hulda Rutland, daughter of James Richard Rutland and Hulda Mary Horton, on 31 May 1942 in Lee County, Alabama.
  • The following appeared on 2 February 1943 in the Thomasville Times-Enterprise: (Athens, Ga.) The navy has announced the transfer of six naval reserve officers attached to the U. S. navy pre-flight school here to other posts in the south.
         The transfers include:
         Lieut. (jg) Osmo Smith, U.S.N.R., who attended high school at Chattanooga, Tenn., graduated from Auburn and coached at Selma, Ala., high school eight years before becoming football coach at Auburn, transferred to the preparatory school, Louisiana State Normal College, Natchitoches, La.
  • Osmo C. Smith died on 6 July 1949 at age 37 in Auburn, Lee County, Alabama.
  • His wife Hulda Rutland became a widow at his death.
  • He was interred at Pine Hill Cemetery, Auburn, Lee County, Alabama.
