According to family lore, a couple of cowboys made improper advances to his stepdaughter and he "whuped" them. The following day they rode up while he was working in the field and they shot him in the back.
The following appeared on 4 February 1892 in The Dallas Morning News: (Navasota, Feb. 3) W. W. Wilkerson shot and killed Frank Lewis last Monday morning, near Bedias in the northern part of Grimes county. Wilkerson fired five shots at Lewis with a 45-caliber Colt's revolver, two of which took effect. The affair is reported to be the outcome of a disagreement about some stock. Wilkerson gave himself up.
