Forgotten graves of men and women who contributed to the upbuilding of the Augusta area during America's pioneer years are being discovered by surveyors who are now at work in the area that will be inundated by the great Clark Hill reservoir when the huge dam is completed. . . . One of the most interesting discoveries occurred last week when surveyors in Lincoln county found some old gravestones buried under leaves and dirt in the cemetery where Gen. Elijah Clark and his family are buried. . . . The cemetery is north of Fishing creek, approximately two miles east of Graball and about 10 miles north of Lincolnton. . . . The two tombstones uncovered last week contain interesting inscriptions. One reads:
"In memory of Elizabeth, the wife of Benajah Smith and daughter of General Elijah Clark, who was born 14th of March, 1770, and died 24th of December, 1813. She was amiable in her disposition, Engaging in her manners, And an ornament to her sex; A faithful friend and a fond parent."
