- The following appeared on 22 November 1943 in The Galveston News: William Whitfield, 57, resident of Galveston since 1926, died at noon yesterday at St. Mary's Infirmary after a short illness. He resided at 3119 N-1/2. He was born Jan. 22, 1888, in Anderson, Tex. For the last 20 years he had been employed as a section foreman for the GH&H Railroad at La Marque. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Josephine Whitfield; two sons, William and Martelle Whitfield, Galveston; his mother, Mrs. Elza Whitfield, Goose Creek; four brothers, three sisters and other relatives. Funeral services will be held this afternoon in the drawing room of Malloy & Son funeral home. The Rev. Charles R. Smith, pastor of Broadway Baptist Church, will officiate and burial will be in Galveston Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be: William Holcomb, E. P. Bailey, J. Aridello, J. A. Van Benthuysen, E. F. Pohl and A. J. Ackerholm.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Whitfield of Port Arthur; a daughter, Mrs. Mardell Sevcik of Bryan; and three grandchildren.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. today. - The following appeared on 11 January 1997 in The Daily News: (Bryan, Texas) Mrs. Gladys Whitfield, 83, passed away January 9, 1997. A Graveside Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 11, 1997, at Forest Park East, Webster, Texas, Ricky Alderete officiating. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday with a Rosary Friday evening at 7 p.m. at the Memorial Funeral Chapel, Bryan, Texas.
Mrs. Whitfield was born in Louisiana, May 8, 1913. She was a housewife and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Her husband, Martel Whitfield, preceded her in death.
Survivors are her daughter, Mardell Sevcik and her husband, Leon of Bryan, Texas; grandchildren Pat Sevcik of Austin, Texas and Lisa Lindemulder of Arlington, Texas; 2 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren.
