• Jacob Gray McWhorter was born circa 1788 in South Carolina.
• He married Susan Clarke Smith, daughter of Benajah Smith and Elizabeth Clarke, on 21 December 1813 in Milford, Cobb County, Georgia.
• Jacob Gray McWhorter became a widower at the 30 September 1836 death of his wife Susan Clarke Smith.
• The following appeared on 26 March 1847 in the Augusta Daily Chronicle & Sentinel: Messrs. Editors -- Please announce Dr. J. G. McWhorter as a candidate for Mayor at the ensuing election.
• The following appeared in a volume of Georgia Supreme Court cases in law and equity: On the 7th day of May, 1847, Jno. T. Hungerford, an insolvent debtor, in consideration that Jacob G. McWhorter would discharge sundry promissory notes, some due, and others still running to maturity, on which the said Hungerford was maker, and the said McWhorter an accommodation indorser, conveyed to McWhorter a negro boy by the name of Yancey, about ten years old, his stock in trade, consisting of saddlery, &c. &c. . . .
• Jacob Gray McWhorter appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1850 in Richmond County, Georgia. Other members of the household included George Gray McWhorter, Mijamin Sidney McWhorter, John Pendleton King McWhorter, McWhorter Hungerford and John T. Hungerford.
• He was a farmer, according to the 1850 census.
• He was interred at Oakwood Cemetery, Montgomery, Alabama.
• The following appeared on 14 January 1852 in the Augusta Daily Chronicle & Sentinel: Farm for Sale or Rent. The subscriber has 70 acres of Land on the S. E. corner of South Commons, which he will sell or rent, on terms to suit. It is now well enclosed, and ready for cultivation, and divided by fences into 3 equal fields of about 23 acres each. It will make a desirable Farm for any one wanting such property. Apply to George G. McWhorter, Law Range, Augusta, or on his Farm, East of the City, to J. G. McWhorter.
• Jacob Gray McWhorter died on 26 August 1852 in Richmond County, Georgia.
• The following appeared on 31 August 1852 in The Georgia Telegraph:

       It is our painful task to record the death of Dr. J. G. McWhorter, who, for many years, has been a highly respected and prominent citizen of this community, and has long been well known and esteemed throughout the State. After retiring from professional practice, he was, for a few years, editor and proprietor of a leading journal in this city, and continued, after retiring from that position, and until recent years, to take a warm interest in public affairs.
       His health has been feeble and declining for sometime, and his death is the close of a tedious and distressing illness. He died at 8 o'clock yesterday morning, at his residence, near this city. He was a gentleman of upright and honorable deportment, and exhibited in all his domestic relations, a kind and affectionate disposition. He was a man of fine attainments and literary tastes, and was a vigorous and graceful writer. Many friends will cherish his memory.
• The following appeared on 4 September 1852 in The Daily Picayune: Dr. J. G. McWhorter, a prominent citizen of Augusta, Ga., and for some years the editor of a daily journal in that city, died there on the 26th ult. [He was editor of the Augusta Courier.]
