Abbott, one of the best-known men in the legal profession in the South, died here this morning at the advanced age of 72 years, following an illness of several weeks. /P/ Mrs. Josephine Abbott, his second wife, died only two months ago, leaving a large estate. Since her death Colonel Abbott has failed rapidly and his death came as no surprise. /P/ The funeral will occur from the First Baptist Church Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock, with prominent Atlantans as active pallbearers. An honorary escort will be composed of supreme, appellate and inferior court judges, leading members of the local bar and well-known citizens. Interment will be in Westview cemetery by the side of his wife. /P/ Colonel Abbott was born in Cherokee County July 3, 1836, [sic] and he received a common school and academic education. He came to Atlanta in 1860 and up to his retirement was known as one of the ablest members of the Atlanta bar. He served through the war in the Twentieth Georgia regiment and saw active service for the first three years. He was then forced to retire from active service on account of ill health and completed his war record in the quartermaster''s department. /P/ He served twice in the legislature from this county, and was a member of the finance committee that built the present state capitol building. He twice declined appointment to a judgeship. /P/ He was married twice, his first wife being Miss Isabelle Hendricks [sic]. His second wife was Mrs. Josephine Richards, generally reputed as the wealthiest woman in Atlanta. Colonel Abbott is survived by two sons, Charles A. Abbott, of New York, and B. F. Abbott, Jr., of Atlanta; also two daughters, Mrs. Belle Dickson, of Panama, and Mrs. George Perrigo, of Chicago.
