b. 26 April 1857, d. 4 July 1918
  • Virginia A. Mitchell was born on 26 April 1857 in Coldspring, San Jacinto County, Texas.
  • She was known as Jennie.
  • James L. Mitchell and Elizabeth M. Griffin appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1860 in Anderson PO, Grimes County, Texas. Other members of the household included Virginia A. Mitchell, Mary Josephine Mitchell and Ellen Mitchell.
  • James L. Mitchell and Elizabeth M. Griffin appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1870 in Galveston, Texas. Other members of the household included Virginia A. Mitchell, Mary Josephine Mitchell, Frank Mitchell, Annie J. Mitchell and Sallie C. Mitchell. While daughter (or niece) Jane appears to be absent from the 1870 household, the fact that daughter Ellen is enumerated as "Millie Mitchell" three households away on the same page, with the Mitchell family number noted next to her name, indicates enumerator error in recording the household. And it is possible that Jane is enumerated as so Frank, age 10.
  • William Barnes Wood and Cornelia Josephine Mitchell appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1880 in Montgomery County, Texas. Other members of the household included Virginia A. Mitchell, Kinnie Mitchell and Jane L. Mitchell. It is educated guess that Jennie is Virginia Mitchell, daughter of Josie's brother James. And it is likely that "Kinnie" and Jane are children of brother Charles, born after the 1860 census. It is an educated guess that Charles Mitchell died of consumption after his discharge from the 5th Texas Infantry.
  • Eugene Smith and Annie J. Mitchell appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1900 in San Jacinto County, Texas. Other members of the household included Virginia A. Mitchell. Also in the household were two servants.
