- John Martin McGilvary and Eleanor McIver appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1850 in Montgomery County, Texas. Other members of the household included William Thomas McGilvary, Elizabeth Ann McGilvary, Alexander Murdock McGilvary, John Clinton McGilvary, Angus Tyson McGilvary, Theodora Louisa McGilvary, Elizabeth Antoinette Nichols and Caroline Malinda Boyd.
- John M. McGilvary and his wife Ellen sold 176 acres in the Joseph Lindley survey to R. M. Powell, by deed dated 17 January 1852, recorded 28 May 1852.
- Her husband John Martin McGilvary became a widower at her death.

- At the death of J. M. McGilvary's wife Eleanor, he brought his sister Mary to Texas to help raise his eight children. When she married Abram Helm in 1854 and moved to Navarro County, she took baby Eleanor to raise. Following Abram's death in 1860, John Martin and his remaining seven children went to Navarro County to live with her.
