John C. Graves
- John C. Graves married Nellie Hopper, daughter of James M. Hopper and Keturah Leah Powers, on 17 June 1896 in Faunsdale, Marengo County, Alabama.
- The following appeared on 20 June 1896 in the Birmingham State Herald: (Faunsdale, June 19) On Wednesday evening a large crowd gathered at the Presbyterian church to witness the marriage of Mr. J. C. Graves and Miss Nellie Hopper.
Promptly at 9 o'clock the organ, under the skillful touch of Miss Mary Walker, pealed forth the inspiring strains of Mendelssohn's wedding march, and the bridal party entered the beautiful and tastefully decorated church in the following order: Up the right and left aisles came the two flower girls, Misses Janie Graves and Addie Morgan, followed by the two ushers, Messrs. George and Harry McKee; then came the bridesmaids and attendants -- W. H. Blackburn and James Chambers, Misses Everett Bosemen and Nell Jeffries, H. Benton, and J. W. Graves, Misses Kathleen Shahan and Ida Horn.
Up the right aisle came the bride, leaning on the arm of her maid of honor, Miss Ethel Graves, sister of the groom, and passed under an arch, from which was suspended the letter "H," while up the left aisle came the groom with his best man, L. A. Morgan, Jr., and passed under an arch with the letter "G" suspended. They formed a circle at the altar, where they were met by Rev. C. B. McLeod under an arch of evergreens and dahlias, from which was suspended a beautiful horse shoe of white daisies. In a few well chosen words the minister pronounced them man and wife. During the ceremony the organ played a "nocturne," and the tones of the organ, mingled with the voice of the minister, made the ceremony very sweet as well as solemn and impressive.
The bridal party left the church and repaired to the residence of Rev. C. B. McLeod, where a magnificent reception was tendered them.
