- James M. Hopper was born circa 1832 in Alabama.
- John Hugh Hopper appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1840 in Neshoba County, Mississippi. Other (counted but unnamed) members of the household apparently included James M. Hopper, William Hopper. He also was enumerated in the Neshoba County state censuses for 1841 and 1845.
- James M. Hopper appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1850 in Marengo County, Alabama, in the household of merchant R. G. Houston.
- He was a clerk, according to the 1850 census.
- He married Keturah Leah Powers, daughter of William B. Powers and Mary Cleveland, on 31 January 1856 in Marengo County, Alabama.
- The Hopper family has not yet been found in the 1860 census.
- J. M. Hopper enrolled on 30 April 1862, at age 30, in Uniontown, Alabama, as a private in Captain Selden's Company, Gid Nelson Light Artillery, Alabama Volunteers, CSA, and was present on muster rolls through December 1862. On the company muster roll for January-March 1863 he was remarked "Absent, Detached Recruiting," March-May 1863 "Absent, Detached on the M&ORR (Enterprise), and May-June 1863 "Absent, Detached Pollard." He was present July-August and August-October 1863, on the November-December company muster roll remarked "Absent, on furlough 20 days since 24 December 1863," and present January-February 1864. After a large gap in the NARA paperwork, Marengo County resident J. M. Hopper, Sergeant Lovelace's Battery, appears on a roll of prisoners of war, "of divers companies and regiments (detached) of the Confederate States Army, commanded by Lt. Col. R. H. Lindsay, surrendered at Citronelle, Ala., by Lieut. Gen. R. Taylor, C.S.A., to Maj. Gen. E. R. S. Canby, U.S.A., May 4, 1865, and paroled at Meridian, Miss., May 12, 1865. Roll dated Meridian, Miss., May 12, 1865."
- James M. Hopper and Keturah Leah Powers appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1870 in Dayton, Marengo County, Alabama, enumerated not far from the family of Kitty's brother John L. Powers.. Other members of the household included Lizzie Hopper, Evelyn Hopper, Mary Louise Hopper, Lelia Hopper, D. Watt Hopper and John Hopper.
