• He married Thenny Geraldine Haynie, daughter of Uriah Haynie and Dialthea Cook Perry, circa 1847.
• Gustavus R. A. Whiting and Thenny Geraldine Haynie appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1850 in Grimes County, Texas, and also in the household 17-year-old John Damm, whose immigrant German parents had died, leaving five children, each of whom was taken into a different home in Grimes County. It is possible that T. A. Hanes, Mrs. Harrison and Mrs. Washington were sisters, posssibly Whitings.. Other members of the household included Mary D. Whiting and Cecilia H. Whiting.

• Gustavus R. A. Whiting and Thenny Geraldine Haynie appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1870 in Anderson, Grimes County, Texas. Other members of the household included Mary D. Whiting and Cecilia H. Whiting. Also in the household was domestic servant Sarah Taylor.
• Gustavus R. A. Whiting died on 6 March 1874.
• His wife Thenny Geraldine Haynie became a widow at his death.
• He was interred at Preston Cemetery, Grimes County, Texas.
