• Charles E. Brown was born on 17 March 1873 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
• Charles E. Brown, a young banker from Montreal, Canada met T. W. Hawkins, a young merchant from Roanoke, Virginia during the Nome Alaska gold rush of 1898. Brown and Hawkins became fast friends who played an important part in establishing the banking and mercantile systems serving central Alaska. Their partnership began in Valdez in 1900, and they relocated to the Seward town site in 1903 to serve as banker and merchant for the building of the Alaska Central Railroad.
• He married Sarah Josephine Wood, daughter of Campbell Wood and Ann Hall Mitchell, on 18 November 1903 in Valdez, Alaska Territory, at Epworth League Church.
• Charles E. Brown became a widower at the 10 December 1907 death of his wife Sarah Josephine Wood.
• According to the 1909-1910 Alaska-Yukon Gazetteer and Business Directory, Charles E. Brown was an agent for Alaska Pacific Express Co., and treasurer of the Seward Chamber of Commerce.
• He married Athel V. (?) say 1910.
• Charles E. Brown registered for the draft on 14 December 1918 while living in Anchorage, and employed as a merchant with Brown & Hawkins.
• Charles E. Brown and Athel V. (?) appeared in the US federal census of 1 January 1920 in Anchorage, Alaska Territory.
• He was proprietor of a general merchandise store, according to the 1920 census.
• According to the 1923-1924 Alaska-Yukon Gazetteer and Business Directory, Charles E. Brown was president of Brown & Hawkins Corp., the Bank of Seward, and the Bank of Anchorage.
• Charles E. Brown died circa 1929.
