- The following appeared on 8 November 1905 in The Montgomery Advertiser: (Demopolis, Nov. 7) T. J. Torbert, a prominent and progessive planter at Jefferson, seven miles south of Demopolis, brought in some extra large figs a day or two ago. They are eight inches in circumference and weighed a quarter of a pound each. They are not freaks, but came off of trees where there are lots more equally as fine, says Mr. Torbert.
That section of Marengo county is peculiarly adapted to fruit, and it was there that this fine fruit recently exhibited here by Dr. J. B. Whitfield was grown. - Thomas Jefferson Torbert Jr. died on 2 December 1908 at age 45 in Mobile, Alabama.
