• Richard M. Whitfield was born on 1 March 1802 in Orange County, North Carolina.
• His name was recorded as Richard Minchew by a number of researchers, although it appears as Richard McMurray in the North Carolina marriage bonds. Note that parents' marriage bondsman was "Richard Minchew," probably brother of Susannah.
• A bond for the marriage of Richard M. Whitfield and Susannah Farquhar was secured on 22 December 1824 in Person County, North Carolina, with William McKissack serving as bondsman/witness.
• The following appeared on 15 November 1842 in the Raleigh Register and North-Carolina Weekly Advertiser: District Court of North Carolina - In Bankruptcy. Notice to shew cause against Petition of . . . Richard M. Whitfield, of Person County, Farmer, to be declared a Bankrupt, at Newbern, on Monday, the 23rd day of January next. . . . By order of the Court, H. H. Potter, Acting Clerk of Court in Bankruptcy.

• Richard M. Whitfield appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1870 in Bushy Fork Township, Person County, North Carolina, enumerated as the only person in his household. Actual date of the enumeration was 14 October, a few weeks before his wife Susannah is thought to have died.
• He was a farmer, according to the 1870 census.
• Richard M. Whitfield became a widower at the circa November 1870 death of his wife Susannah Farquhar.
• Richard M. Whitfield died circa January 1874 in Orange County, North Carolina.
