The meeting will be in the theater of the UNM Student Union Building at 8 p.m. Afterward there will be an informal discussion in the Faculty Lounge. Refreshments will be served. [ . . . ] - The following appeared on 13 February 1962 in The New Mexican: A scholarship fund which small donations have largely built is halfway to its goal in three years, and the sponsors have decided to concentrate their efforts on making the fund self-perpetuating this year.
Miss Jennie Avery, chairman of the Portia Irick Scholarship Fund, said the fund has paid half the expense of a student nurse at the College of Nursing, University of New Mexico in the amount of $600 a year for the past three years.
Mrs. Lockett Wood, the former Miss Michael Miller of Tatum, was the honor student selected as the first recipient of the scholarship. She is now in her senior year, and the dean of the College of Nursing has reported that she is "a credit to the university, the College of Nursing, and the Portia Irick Scholarship Fund. She maintains an especially high level of performance and has continued to be an honor student, averaging 2.4 out of three grade points."
