  • The following appeared on 18 February 1869 in the Montgomery [Alabama] Mail: We regret to announce the death of Judge Alexander B. Clitherall, which occurred at his residence, near this city, yesterday. Judge Clitherall had been in very feeble health for many years from dropsy. We might say he has lived for the last three or four years upon a bare thread of life. /P/ Judge Clitherall was a lawyer by profession, and he held many positions of honor and usefulness, having repeatedly been a member of both branches of the State Legislature, where he ranked high among the foremost men in those bodies. He was for a number of years Clerk of the House of Representatives, the duties of which poistion he performed with great dispatch and efficiency. He was at one time a Circuit Judge in this State. /P/ Judge Clitherall had many firiends throughout the State. He was sociable and kind in his disposition, and exceedingly fond of innocent fun and sportive jokes, in which few persons excelled him. He was born in North Carolina, and was at the time of his death forty-five or fifty years of age. He had lived in Montgomery for the last nine years, previous to which he lived in the western part of the State. He leaves a wife and children to mourn his loss.
