  • The town of Brevard, in Transylvania County, North Carolina, was named for surgeon and Revolutionary War Colonel Ephraim Brevard, who also drafted the Mecklenberg Delcaration of Independence. He joined the fight for independence when the British invaded the South, and was taken prisoner at the surrender of Charleston. He was among prisoners who became severely ill from such afflictions as dysentery, and he never recovered, despite special medicines and treatment. He is buried in an unmarked grave in Hopewell. He studied medicine at Princeton College.
