  • The following appeared on 6 February 1881 in the New York Herald: William Delamater, who died yesterday, was born sixty-five years ago in a little house near the old Park Theatre, in Bookman street. All of his life was passed in this city, and his name is familiar to many of the old residents through the active part he at one time took in city politics. In 1816 [sic] he was elected Alderman and later was made Health Warden.
  • The following appeared on 17 February 1881 in The Sun: Mr. William Delamater, whose funeral took place at 132 West Eleventh street yesterday, was born in 1816, and, being an orphan, was raised by his uncle, Isaac Delamater, who kept the Sock and Buskin saloon, adjoining the old Park Theatre in Park Row. It was a building in the old Dutch style, and much frequented by the actors and sporting men of the period.
         Isaac’s father was a frenchman, and kept a confectionery store in the building he owned. William learned the trade of a sailmaker, but subsequently worked at it but little. He was a member of the police force on its first organization, when it replaced the old watchman system. He became a sergeant. After leaving the force he engaged in politics, and was for years either Health Inspector of the Eighth Ward or Street Inspector of the Ninth Ward.
