- The following appeared on 26 October 1948 in The San Diego Union: (Chanute Field, Oct. 25) Chanute Field, Ill., Oct. 25 (INS)--Three men killed in the crash of an Airforce C-47 transport plane at Chanute Field were identified today.
The dead were identified by officers at Wright-Patterson Field, Dayton, O., where the craft was based. They were Maj. Frank E. Boyd, 30, the pilot, of Cleveland, O; Lt. Col. Paul Waterman, 31, of Burlington, Vt., and T/Sgt. Maurice A. Neidringhaus, 25, of Evansville, Ind., the crew chief.
The twin-engined transport crashed last night as it was attempting to land during a fog at Chanute Field.
The plane undershot the runway, ripped the roof off one unoccupied barracks and plowed into another. There was no fire.
The 19 other persons aboard the transport were injured and taken to the base hospital.
The plane was en route to Wright Field from Los Angeles. Officers who investigated the wreckage said the ship's gasoline tanks were empty.
