Five years ago on Dec. 17, 1905, Mr. Lewis began his pastorate among the members of the Presbyterian Church, moving here with his estimable family about the first of the year 1906. At that time the First Presbyterian Church was composed of a little band of workers, just 22 in number which, by the earnest consecration, the zealous labor, and combined efforts of the pastor and people, has grown to 112 at the present time, with a high standing in the Presbytery of Central Texas. This year the church will expend nearly $4,000 in gifts and expenses.
In the Bible work, five different classes, 55 students in all, are making a study of the Bible. This year a systematic review of the Life of Christ is being made under the direction of Mr. Lewis.
Mr. Lewis goes to the First Presbyterian Church at Navasota, one of the oldest and among the strongest churches of the Synod, located in the Presbytery of Central Texas, and, while we feel that our loss is almost beyond reparation we can but congratulate the Navasota people on their success in calling him to their field. An earnestly consecrated, broad minded minister of the Gospel and a man among men is the greatest eulogy that can be given him.
The family will leave Clifton for their new home about the middle of December.
The past five years have been delightful ones in Clifton church passing harmoniously, without the least possible discord or strife, the church all the while growing in grace abundantly blessed , the members have been faithful in the discharge of their duties, all working together for the accomplishment of one great purpose--the upbuilding of the Master's kingdom, and the relations between pastor and people have been most pleasant.
Mr. Lewis and every member of his family have endeared themselves, not only to members of the Presbyterian church but to the Clifton people as well. It can be truly said none knew them but to love them and they will be greatly missed in the social life of our town as well as in religious circles.
At the close of the address at the morning service on next Sunday, Dec. 4, there will be a congregational meeting. Every member is urged to be present and join with the pastor in a request to the Presbytery to dissolve the present pastoral relations.
