  • The following appeared on 24 November 1956 in The Waco News-Tribune: (Austin, Nov. 23) Sharp criticism has been issued here by the secretary of the State prison Board regarding the treatment of a 56-year-old alcoholic prostitute by local officers.
Dr. George Beto said the treatment of Mrs. Maggie Deison was neither "humane nor moral." Mrs. Deison, although seriously ill, was driven to a prison hospital near Huntsville from the Travis County jail.
She died recently at the prison hospital, shortly after being sentenced to five years for the knife slaying of her common law husband, ex-convict Robert Allen McClary.
Howard Bowden, deputy sheriff who drove the car, said Sheriff T. O. Lang ordered the trip only after being assured by county physician Harold M. Williams that it would be all right. Dr. Williams said yesterday he suspected the woman was near death but felt she might just as well be sent to a prison hospital as put in one here "because prison was where she was headed."
Prison records gave cause of her death as sclerosis of the liver.
