- The following appeared on 29 January 1924 in The Galveston Daily News: (Henderson, Jan. 28) Staying on his engine to the last, trying to cut off the fires, to save the passengers of his train from being burned to death, cost V. D. Hill, fireman on the International-Great Northern Railway, his life this morning about three miles south of Overton. Hill was on passenger train No. 3. A head-on collision was had with freight train extra No. 401. No one was injured seriously except Hill, who was scalded so badly that he died about two hours later. [:CR;] Edward Arnold, veteran of railway mail service and former chief clerk, was riding No. 3 but escaped serious injury.
Hill resided at Palestine and is survived by his wife and two children. - At the time of his death Vernon Dalkeith Hill was living in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, at 523 Burwood Lane.
