  • The following appeared on 13 May 1946 in The Bellington Herald: Buried by cascading snow after he plunged over a fog-obscrued 30-foot cliff on Shuksan Arm, Lieut. (j.g.) Robert E. Seibels, 28, of Columbia, S. C., was killed Sunday afternoon at Mount Baker.
Reputedly an excellent skier with European experience, Selbels was reported to have stopped two companions with a shouted warning as he hurtled to his death.
Another naval officer summoned help and a ski patrol party led by Dr. Otto Trott, of Seattle, located the body under ten feet of snow. Death apparently was due to suffocation.
Seibels was attached to the medical corps, U. S. Naval reserve, at Seattle. He was one of a party of naval personnel skiing Sunday at the lodge.
Shuksan Arm adjoins Austin pass on its eastern flank and is a favorite trip for expert skiers.
