Lawrence Smith Chaney

  • Lawrence Smith Chaney was born on 7 March 1886 in Texas.
  • The following appeared on 20 August 1915 in The Dallas Morning News: (Longview, Texas, Aug. 19) R. R. Chaney, one of the first inhabitants of Longview, died here Wednesday.
         Mr. Chaney was born at Purdy, Tenn., in 1852, married Miss Ellen Johnson in 1874, at which time he came here as the first railroad telegrapher. He served twenty years as day operator and went into the saw mill and mercantile business, in which he remained up to a few years ago, when he retired to private life. He leaves a wife and five children, Mrs. D. J. Dobbs, Miss Mollie Chaney, Mrs. t. L. Bramlette, Lawrence Chaney and Miss Nina Chaney, all living at this place. Four of the children are dead. He was a member of the Methodist Church and all his children are prominent church workers.
  • He married Gussie Sandefur, daughter of Patrick Washington Sandefur and Lela Francis Pegues.
  • Lawrence Smith Chaney died on 15 July 1960 at age 74 in Longview, Gregg County, Texas, at 1107 Gardenia.
  • His wife Gussie Sandefur became a widow at his death.
  • He was interred at Grace Hill Cemetery, Longview, Gregg County, Texas.
