- James McClellan Pegues was born on 21 July 1900 in Mississippi.
- Nicholas T. Pegues and Sophia Rebecca (?) appeared in the US federal census of 15 April 1910 in Winona, Montgomery County, Mississippi, at Powell Street near the household of Nick's brother Paul. Other members of the household included James McClellan Pegues, Nicholas T. Pegues Jr., Ezilda Pegues and Mary Pegues. Also in the household was Tennessee-born Joella C. Shugog (age 65), identified as a cousin.
- James McClellan Pegues died on 26 June 1918 at age 17 in Colbert County, Alabama.
- He was interred at Oakwood Cemetery, Winona, Montgomery County, Mississippi.
- The following appeared on 27 June 1918 in the Hattiesburg American: News of the death of James McClellan Pegues, aged 18 years, nephew of Mrs. H. S. Stevens, of Hattiesburg, reached here today, and will cause deepest regret in this city, as he made a host of friends while visiting the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Stevens upon several occasions.
The young man graduated with first honors from the Winona High School last year and spent his first year after high school work at the University of Mississippi during the last session. He recently went with the government at the nitrate plant near Sheffield, Ala., and was badly burned during a fire that destroyed several quarters for men a week ago. The young man lingered until last night, when he passed away.
Mr. Pegues, although barely 18 years of age, was in the service of his country to help win the war and had important duties to perform at one of the great plants where materials for war munitions are being manufactured. His father, N. T. Pegues, is a prominent merchant at Winona. Mrs. Pegues is a sister of Mrs. H. S. Stevens. Mr. Paul Pegues, brother of the young man's father, will be remembered as a prominent merchant of Winona, and is a brother-in-law of Ex-Congressman Shed Hill.
Nick Pegues, a brother of the deceased, is at Camp Beauregard, in the service, and Prof. C. C. Harvey, a brother-in-law of the deceased, is in the officers' training school at Camp Shelby. Maj. Ben McClellan, who is on Gen. Pershing's staff, is a first cousin of Mrs. H. S. Stevens and her sister, Mrs. Pegues, mother of the deceased. - The following appeared on 8 September 1944 in The Winona Times: Funeral services for Mrs. Sophia Rebecca Pegues, 70, were conducted by Rev. Hamilton Jones at the Immanuel Episcopal Church, Winona, at 3:00 p. m. Tuesday. She passed away at a Jackson hospital Monday.
The Pegues family were pioneers of Montgomery County, Mrs. Pegues husband, the late Nick T. Pegues, Sr., was connected with the Pegues Hardware Company for a number of years, then with the Winona Hardware Company. He died in 1934.
Mrs. Pegues was a Gold Star mother, having lost two sons during World War I. Nicholas T. Pegues, Jr., was killed in France a few minutes before the Armistice was declared. The local American Legion post was named in his honor. James Pegues was working in a defense plant at Muscle Shoals, Alabama, where he was burned and died. Mrs. Pegues was born near Rocky Springs, Claiborne County, Miss.
The deceased is survived by: Two daughters, Mrs. C. C. Harvey, Winona, and Mrs. Frank Albers, Fairhope, Ala; a sister Mrs. W. A. Wilson, Durham, N. C; five grandsons, Clarence C. Harvey, Jr., Baton Rouge, La., Capt. Nicholas P. Harvey, U. S. Army Air Corps, overseas, Lt. Robert H. Harvey, U. S. Army Air Corps, Eglin Field, Fla., Pvt. Joseph M. Harvey, U. S. Army Air Corps, Keesler Field, Miss., and E. Malcolm Harvey, Winona.
Active pallbearers were: C. M. Jaco, W. H. Peterson, Geo. H. Flowers, S. B. Bridges, J. E. Mortimer and Mark Bennett.
Funeral arrangements were in charge of Oliver Funeral Home.
