Josephine Pegues

  • The following appeared on 8 June 1952 in The Delta Democrat-Times: (Cleveland) Services for Miss Mary Louise Pegues, who died Thursday morning at the home of her sister, Mrs. H. T. Griffith in Cleveland, were held Friday afternoon at St. Peters Episcopal Church at Oxford.
         The Rev. Mr. Christian of Vicksburg and the Rev. Mr. Asgar of Oxvord officiated. Burial followed in the Oxford cemetery with Thweatt Funeral Home of Cleveland in charge.
         Miss Pegues, who was 55, was a native of Oxford. An art graduate from L.S.U., Baton Rouge, La., she attended the Fine Arts Academy at New York City, and Chester Fine Arts Academy at Chester Springs, Pa. For many years she was a member of the school faculty at Frias Point, Miss., and later taught Art at All Saint's College in Vicksburg for 12 years. She was well known in this State for some of her works, especially for portrait work. She had long been ill and had retired from the teaching profession.
         She leaves her mother, Mrs. J. E. Pegues of Oxford; a brother, John McKie Pegues, also of Oxford, and three sisters, Mrs. Marguerite Smith and Mrs. H. T. Griffith, both of Cleveland and Miss Juliette Pegues of Oxford.

  • Josephine Pegues died on 3 March 1990 at age 81.
  • She was interred at Prentiss Cemetery, Prentiss, Jefferson Davis County, Mississippi.
